Volos is considered as one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. Two of the best preserved prehistoric settlements are located just a few kilometers outside the city, at Sesklo and Dimini.
At this very place, at the foot of Mount Pelion, the ancient city of Iolcos has been the harbour from which Jason and the Argonauts set sail for their mythical journey.
Today at the port of Volos you can see a model replica of theirship Argo. Every summer the new Argo sails out in the open sea of the Pagasitikos Gulf in commemoration of Jason and his companions.
WALKING AROUND THE CITY
The best way to discover Volos city is to walk its streets. Don't miss the neighbourhoodsof Agios Konstantinos and Nea Dimitriada to see the flower-blooming patios and the traditional cafes
Pass by the quarter of "Palia" where you can visit the Tsalapatas Brickworks Museum and dine at gourmet restaurants -have a glass of "tsipouro", taste the wines of Nea Aghialos and feast on lobster spaghetti!.
Make a stop at Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre that took its name from the Volos-born, Italian, surrealist. From the Goritsa hill you can admire the panoramic view of Pagasitikos gulf. In case you have a feel for the sea, the beaches are there for you -Alykes, Anavros, Plakes and, of course, the beach right in front of the Domotel Xenia Volos hotel.
LOCAL TASTES – TSIPOURADIKA
Tsipouro is a Greek double distilled spirit containing approximately 36%-45% alcoholby volume.
The first production of tsipouro took place seven centuries ago in the monasteries of Mount Athos, but in modern times it is synonymous with Volos, thanks to "tsipouradika", the little taverns offering local tsipouro accompanied by dozens of "mezedes" (appetizers).
Having a break for tsipouro is a midday ritual for all locals and something that no visitor should miss!
The homeland of Centaurs according to the Greek Mythology. The mountain, from the peaks down to the beaches, is enchanting all year round. Visit the villages and observe the splendid traditional architecture and the stone-built manor houses in Makrynitsa and Portaria.
Taste spoon sweets and apples at Zagora. Visit the Music Village in AgiosLavrentios, in the summer.
Try the spetzofai at Pinakates. Go to Mouresi and the famous Tsagarada village. Ski or snowboard at the ski centre (just 1,5kmaway). Smell the gardenias at Makryrachi and admire chestnuts from Pouri. Follow the forest trails in Kissos and Lestiani and he 4x4 trails in the area of Drakos Skamni.
Admire the noble houses at Vyzitsa and Anilio.
Take a ride with the historic Pelion's steam train connecting Ano Lechonia with Milies village. Of course, don't forget to visit Ntamouchari, famous for the beautiful scenery in the movie Mamma Mia!
Volos can be the point of departure to the islands of Northern Sporades- two hours away, at most, from the city port.
