Paleos Agios Athanasios (Kaimaktsalan) | THE SKI RESORT & MOUNTAIN RETREAT


A luxurious traditional village on the slopes of Mount Voras (Kaimaktsalan), just a breath away from the most cosmopolitan ski resort in Northern Greece.


The traditional, preserved settlement of Agios Athanasios or Tseganis is located 30 kilometers away from the city of Edessa and very close to the Kaimaktsalan skiing center.

Paleos Agios Athanasios is built at an altitude of 1200 meters, at the mountain sides of Mount Voras (or Kaimaktsalan). The village itself was built towards the end of 16th century and was inhabited until the end of 1980s when its citizens were relocated to a new settlement that is located 6 kilometers below the Paleos Agios Athanasios.

The visitor will have a chance to admire the roof-tile buildings of the village, exemplary samples of traditional local architecture built with hewer stone. In the old, as well as the new village, there are restaurants, cafes and night clubs.


Just 10 kilometers from Paleos Agios Athanasios, the ski center of Kaimaktsalan offers the most modern facilities and a breathtaking view. It is located at an altitude of 2050 -2480 meters.


It features a shelter, skiing schools, parking spaces, starters' circuits, ticket vendors and skiing equipment rental services, as well as the highest ski lift in Greece. Winter sports fans prefer it for skiing as well as for a plethora of other activities, such as airboard trailand snowboarding. It is one of the few skicenters in Greece that have good quality snow for skiing for a long period of time.

The circuits are well known for their large width as their gentle slopes, which cater to all tastes of skiers. For those who prefer to enjoy the snowy scenery with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate or a glass of wine,the ski center resort welcomes visitors who wish to enjoy their relaxation in its fabulous chalet.


In Naoussa, next to the vineyards, you will find the School of Aristotle, the great philosopher who taught the world Philosophy, Ethics, Arts and Mathematics. The most famous student of Aristotle was Alexander the Great.


While in the area, it is an opportunity to visit Vergina, the capital of the region, where the greatest military commander of all times was born and raised. The museum of Verginais one of the best in the world.

Entering the imposing burial site of the kings of Macedonia, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander, will make you shiver in awe before the wealth and majesty of the Macedonian Kingdom.


The traditional settlement of Paleos Agios Athanasios offers a wide range of cafes, bars and lively clubs where the visitor can enjoy a really good coffee or hot chocolate and later share drinks with friends.


Its cosmopolitan character, being a popular lifestyle destination for the North, makes the village lively and fun during all times of day.

The atmosphere in most venues is warm and bubbly. exactly what you need after a long day on the ski slopes of Kaimaktsalan!

Wood and stone is everywhere around you, while in most cafes and bars a fireplace dominates the space.


What about riding or biking? You can reach the top, Piperitsa (altitude: 2000m), across the forest, in 4 hours.


Only a short walk from the village is the international path, E4/6, which leads to the Scope of Florina, through vast forests and canyons. The journey lasts 5 hours. Very close to Agios Athanasios, in the village Panagitsa, you will meet the facilities of the Edessa Gliding Club. There you can enjoy a unique experience, gliding and parachuting down the slope. Next to these facilities operates a motocross track.

At the foot of the mountain Kaimaktsalan, there is Vegoritida Lake. The visitor is charmed by the catholic presence of the liquid element. Swimming, fishing, boating, sailing, tours along the banks of the lake are some of the activities you should not miss.


Edessa is the capital city of the Pella Prefecture, home of Alexander the Great, and it is known as the city of waterfalls which were created in 1395 after a massive earthquake that almost leveled the entire city.


The waterfalls, the historic center, the archaeological grounds, the Outdoor Water Museum, the city Aquarium, the "Koimisi tis Theotokou" , a 14th century church, the remains of the old Christian and Byzantine churches in the lowercity of Loggos, and the "Yeni Tzami" are some of the attractions for the visitors of the city.

The well-known Pozar Spa (Loutra Pozar) or Aridaia Baths (Loutra Aridaias) or Loutraki Baths (Loutra Loutrakiou) or medicinal baths Pozar, are 32 kilometers away from Edessa.

The cleansing water pours out of the medicinal fountains of the baths, suitable for balneotherapy as well as drinking therapy. Even with snow, the stable water temperature in the natural pools remains at 37 degrees Celsius.

There are caves on top of the baths, many of which have yet to be explored.
